AI & Agentic Systems

Your Website Is Now Read by AI Agents, Not Just People

More customers are letting AI shop, shortlist, and book for them. Your website is the interface that agent reads. What that changes, and how to be the business it picks.

Your next customer might send an AI to your website first

For years there has been one audience for your website: people. That is changing. A growing share of customers now use AI to help them shop, compare, and decide, and increasingly to act on their behalf, shortlisting options, filling in forms, even starting a booking or a purchase. When that happens, the first visitor to your site is not the customer. It is the customer's AI agent, reading your site to decide whether you make the shortlist.

This is not a distant scenario. It is already measurable, and it quietly changes what a website is for.

The shift, in numbers

By early 2026, a global study from the IBM Institute for Business Value and the National Retail Federation found that close to half of consumers, around 45%, now turn to AI for help during their shopping, using it to research products, interpret reviews, and hunt for deals. Looking ahead, Morgan Stanley has projected that by 2030 close to half of online shoppers, on the order of 126 million people, will use AI shopping agents for a meaningful chunk of their spending.

The direction is not ambiguous. A real and rising portion of buying decisions now passes through an AI before a human ever sees your business, and the businesses that are legible to that AI get put in front of the customer while the others get skipped.

What an agent needs from your website

An AI reading your site is looking for the same things a careful human wants, just more literally. It needs to understand, quickly and unambiguously, what you do, who you serve, where, what it costs, and how to take the next step. Clear, well-structured content, honest and specific, in plain text it can actually parse, is what lets an agent represent you accurately to its owner. A site that is vague, buried in images, or coy about the basics is a site an agent cannot vouch for, so it moves on to one it can.

This is also the truthful version of "how do I get recommended by AI." It is not a trick or a hidden tag. AI answer engines and shopping agents surface businesses they can clearly understand and corroborate, backed by a consistent presence across the web and real signals like reviews. Being genuinely clear and consistent is the optimisation.

Your website just became infrastructure, not a brochure

Here is why this matters beyond search. A website used to be a brochure a person read and judged. It is becoming an interface that software reads and acts on, the point where an AI meets your business and decides whether to recommend, shortlist, or book you. That raises the stakes on getting it right, and it is the on-ramp to the bigger shift: the same clarity that makes your site legible to a customer's agent is the groundwork for running agents of your own. A modern website is the fastest way into an agentic business, and now also the face your business shows to everyone else's agents.
